TITLE: Laboratory General Manager
REPORTS TO: Vice President of Operations
POSITION FUNCTION:
The successful Laboratory General Manager will bring a practical “hands-on” management style to the site that will include decisiveness and industry-appropriate confidence. They will have an entrepreneurial disposition, thinking as an owner to grow the Service business rapidly and profitably.
The Laboratory General Manager will develop a culture focused on performance within the organization, across all functional operations of the business. The selected candidate will author the overall strategic vision of the state business and lead the tactical execution of that vision.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Drive significant and profitable growth:
The primary responsibility of the Laboratory General Manager is to drive growth for the organization. Through an appropriate combination of business development, operational and technical activities, the Laboratory General Manager will lead a high-performance team to identify and implement short and long-term growth opportunities.
2. Manage the true P&L of the division:
The Laboratory General Manager will be charged with complete ownership of the P&L, understanding all functional areas of their organization and the levers within each that impact all inputs to the P&L. They will clearly understand the impact every decision has on the top and bottom line of the company and maximize the profitable impact of both.
3. Oversee sales and business strategy:
The Laboratory General Manager will place specific emphasis on sales growth. The selected candidate must demonstrate an entrepreneurial and hands-on ability to build revenue within the market. As revenue grows, must be able to cultivate an appropriate sales team and challenge them to think like entrepreneurs, creatively and profitably expanding top-line revenue.
4. Oversee Lab Operations:
Operational responsibility will include; proposing major investments to company executives, ensuring that the laboratory expenses are on track with the annual budget, approving major expenses, controlling the costs of the laboratory within established company guidelines, and continuous improvement of operational performance. Must be able to analyze monthly laboratory key performance indicators (operating and labor costs, turnaround time, productivity, etc.) and coordinate the interaction between the different laboratory departments. The General Manager will be responsible for hiring and maintaining a high-performing team and establishing a positive culture consistent with the organization’s culture. The ability to understand and follow each Quality System document relevant to employment responsibilities, e.g., methods, SOPs, etc. will be critical to success. Must conduct all activities in a safe and efficient manner.
5. Ensure overall Compliance with State and Organization Requirements
A component of operational success is ensuring that the laboratory remains within a state of compliance. The General manager working with Lab Operations lead as well as the local QA leader is responsible for ensuring that the lab remains within a state of compliance with both state-specific as well as company-defined requirements.
INTERFACES WITH:
As the site lead, the Laboratory General Manager will interface with everyone within the state and will play a critical role in creating and nurturing the culture of the organization. In addition, they will have significant interaction with the leaders and key Senior Executives within the organization, fostering a cooperative and partnering relationship with those groups. The position provides significant exposure to critical third-party partners including, but not limited to, customers, and industry leaders.

The selected candidate must have proven that, in past leadership roles, they have been a driving factor in significantly growing and leading a business. The Laboratory General Manager must have done so organically.

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate entrepreneurial capabilities both in character and in prior business engagements. The Organization views leaders as entrepreneurs and provides the autonomy to run the business as though they were the owner. The ability to think and perform in this manner is an absolute requirement.
3. Operations Leadership
The successful candidate must have strong operations experience proven through prior success in authoring and implementing operations strategies in relevant industries. A pension for driving customer satisfaction and efficiency measures will be valued. An appreciation of and respect for quality and compliance is necessary.
4. Sales and Business Strategy
This Laboratory General Manager must have developed proven strategies for growing sales, which were successfully and consistently implemented in prior leadership roles. They will have demonstrated the ability to analyze multiple strategies, determine the best course of action, and drive them to success.
5. Team Development and Communication
The Laboratory General Manager will be a proven leader of high-performance organizations, skilled in identifying, hiring, developing, and retaining A-Players. The ideal candidate will have effective communication skills and know how to establish, measure, and drive results of appropriate KPI’s for the organization.
6. Educational requirement
Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, business, or other related degree concentration, with at least 7 years of directly-related experience. MS preferred.

The Laboratory General Manager must be a self-motivated, high-energy individual who can easily function in a high-demand, performance-driven environment. They must be accustomed to working on multiple tasks in parallel. The Laboratory General Manager must display strong leadership skills, best demonstrated by the individual’s ability to gain credibility with team members and all senior leaders of the organization. The highest level of honesty and integrity, while assumed, cannot be overstated.
